Verona is a pretty city. Unfortunately I got to see very little but what I did see had a lovely feel to it. Not far away from where I was staying was part of a wall called Porta Leoni, which was built in the middle of the 1st century BC. It's name comes from a sarcophagus lid decorated with two lions which is now somewhere else in the city.
Accordingly, there are lots of places devoted to Leoni!! Here are just a few.
She gets around!
the markets have the usual array of delightful goodies, some healthy, others totally decadent, like the huge fritters deepfried, coated with sugar and then filled with nutella.
Marzipan fruits for my friend who loves it, sorry I couldn't bring it home! The day began with a cloud cover, fortunately fining with a lovely blue sky which made the views a lot more pleasant. |
no doubt worried about running out of room at Juliets house they've begun on the river |
Birds eye view or what? |
Bringing in the items for the market stalls |
delicacies all ready to take home |
This guy would embroider anything in the shop with whatever you wanted right in front of you.
The view over Verona from the Lamberti Tower is amazing.
Similarities to the Tuscan countryside can be seen, regardless it is all beautiful. This tower is the largest in Verona and like so many others had a particular purpose for the community, in this case the two bells, one small to mark the hours and in case of fire. The larger called the Town Council together or the citizens to arms to defend the city.
Ciao
